Tulips are unusual among cut flowers because they continue to grow even after being cut, sometimes elongating by several inches in a vase. This behavior is rooted in their biology and their adaptation to cold spring environments.

Tulip stems are also highly hydrotropic and phototropic—they respond strongly to water and light. When placed in a vase, the cells on the shaded side of the stem elongate more than those exposed to light, causing the flower to bend and subtly reposition itself toward the light source. This gives tulips their characteristic, almost animated movement.

This ongoing growth is why tulips appear so lively in arrangements and why florists often embrace their natural movement as part of their charm rather than trying to restrain it.
